What is Aesthetic Pruning?

The East Bay is a hub for Aesthetic pruning.

Aesthetic pruning is a tradition based on the work of bonsai master and Berkeley native, Dennis Makishima. The practice applies bonsai principles to landscape trees and shrubs. Makishima pioneered this technique starting the 1980s after working on a Japanese Black Pine. This spark led Makishima to develop a commonsense approach to pruning that took into consideration the tree's context. This approach asks the question: How do we bridge urban setting with the natural essence of a tree? Makishima teases out a tree's individuality while considering the needs of the homeowner.

At Dillon Garden and Tree, we are appreciative for the rich culture of aesthetic pruning that Dennis Makishima grew. Our team applies these principals and constantly strives to bring nature into urban and residential spaces.
